Barot is a hidden paradise located at the bank of Uhl river at the altitude of 6000 fts from sea level. Location in the middle of forest of Tosh and Devdara. Barot valley at the borader of Kangra and Mandi Distt. Few More Villages like Luhardi, Multhan nearby which is part of Barot. Barot is known for 1st hydroproject of India built in 1926 by king of Mandi Named Raja Joginder Singh and Col Betty.
Train track of 126 km constructed till Jogindernagar from Pathankot and 9 km Winch Trolly from Jogindernagar to Barot for transportation of heavy machinery of Hydropoject equipments. Barot is reservoir where water of Uhl river stored and tunnel to other side of valley towards Jogindernagar and turbines to generate electricity.
Barot is Famous for its beautiful landscape, Local traditional villages, Pahari culture.
Trekking in Barot –
Start trek of 4 km from Barot through village and Col. Betty rest house to reach upper top point at headgear at 7500 feet. Headgear is heightest point has view of both valleys and another 2 km trek in flat abandon rail trek till winch camp. Winch camp is point where Holiage winch trolly still operational for hydroproject purpose. Winch Camp has view of Valley in front and one can see old machinery around. You can trek back to headgear and then follow rail route to reach Barot. All trek is 4-5 hrs.
Barot is Famous for Trout fish farms. If you love fish then Barot has many food joints who cook fish.
Route to Reach Barot from Bir –
Route 1 to Reach Barot – Bir to to Raj Gundha to Badagran to Barot. (51 km/ 3-4 hrs)
Bir to Billing (16 km/ 1 hr) — Billing to Raj Gundha (12 km/ 2 hr) — Raj Gundha to Badagran (6 km/ 30 min) — Badagran to Barot (17 km/ 30 min).
This route 1 is not suggested to drive by you own car as road is narrow and some patches between Billing and Raj Gundha are very narrow with deep gourge and unsafe. So take taxi, if you travelling by this route. This route is closed from mid December to Mid March for drive due to Snow. Also due to concrete filling over road, this road is also closed between Billing to Raj Gundha till 16 of June 2024.
Route 2 to Reach Barot – Bir to Jogindernagar to Ghatsni to Barot. (50 km/ 2 hrs)
Bir Bir to Jogindernagar (12 km/ 30 min) — Jogindernagar to Ghatsni (12 km/30 min) — Ghatasni to Barot (25 km /1 hr)
This route 2 is easily motorable and one can ride car easily, road is single and mountain road. This route has bus connectivity as well. 5 buses a day on this route from Bir to Barot and further villages till badagran.
Route to Reach Barot from Manali and Chandigarh –
Route 3 to Reach Barot from Manali – Manali to Mandi to Ghatasni to Barot. (175 km/ 5 hrs)
Manali to Mandi (105 km/ 2hr and 30 min) — Mandi to Ghatasni (45 km/ 1 hr 30 min) — Ghatasni to Barot (25 km /1 hr)
Route 4 to Reach Barot from Chandigarh – Chandigarh to Mandi to Ghatasni to Barot. (235 km/ 5-6 hrs)
Chandigarh to Mandi (165 km/ 3 hr and 30 min) — Mandi to Ghatasni (45 km/ 1 hr 30 min) — Ghatasni to Barot (25 km /1 hr)
This route 4 is easily motor able, till Mandi its 4 lane and normally takes 3 hrs from Chandigarh and then its bit narrow.

Reach Bir and Book Taxi for full day by following Route – Bir to Billing to Badagran to Barot to Jogindernagar to Bir (80 km/ 5-6 hrs) Enroute visit Raj Gundha, Barot and evening return to Barot. There is not much activities and option to do, you can cover all things there in 1 day.
