Trekking To Kareri Lake, Himachal Pradesh.

Trek Name – Kareri Lake Trek.
Attraction – Lake at the base of snow-covered mountains, mountain stream from start to end of trek.

Trek Length – 14 km / 5 to 7 hrs
Difficulty level – Easy to moderate.
Days required to complete – 2 days trekking and 1 night camping at Kareri Lake.

Road Approach – 25 km from Dharamshala via ghroh, Ghera, kareri village till Nouli village bridge and 25 km from Shahapur via Drini, Salli till Nauli bridge.
Reach at Nauli Bridge, leave your car and start your trek,
please do check important things before start.
• Rain gear – mountain weather change rapidly.
• cover – Rain cover for your bag as well to keep your stuff dry.
• Windproof Jacket, extra layer of cloths, cap, extra pair of socks and comfortable shoes.
• filling -Water-bottle- option available during trek.
• Your emergency raasan – dry fruits, chocolates, candies and biscuit.
• Torch and batteries.
• Sun Cream, sun glasses.
• Stay arrangements at Lake – trek is long and difficult to return in a day. Camping arrangements.
• Food arrangements – few small dhaba type cafes but sometime out of rasan and only chai, maggi available.
No network during trek and lake, local guide says sometime it’s at few points but difficult to track.
Trek start from Nauli bridge which is easy till ‘Jheel cafe’ at the distance of half hour trek. Now first stream cross over cold water, stones and small jumps. Be careful and take help of other, if not habitual of walking on stones. Trek is steep uphill just after crossing river. Trek is passing through dense forest of Oak and Rhododendron. Later after trekking for another one hour you reach at stone area with huge big boulders and less tress around. Just after small waterfall cross stream over metal bridge. Here is cafe and camping stay option, area with foil smell as this is also sheep, goat flocks settlement. Trek uphill and cross many shepherd temporary settlements. Be careful as trail is built of stones and slippery at water areas. Trek is following stream and uphill mostly with small level patches. There are snow patches to cross depend upon month of year you are trekking. Before reaching lake you can see snow covered mountains in front towards lake. Follow the trail to reach temple of Lake with first clear and full view of Kareri lake.
Lake is elongated to somewhere 300 mts long oval shaped clesr water having reflection of snow covered mountains. Glacier snow water is source of water of lake.
Before exploring lake and around, get settled. Find a place for camping and collect fire wood from around before getting dark. Northern end of Lake is best place for camping with full view of lake and flat area along with water source nearby.
Nights are cold and clear with stars in sky, if full moon nothing better than that. Enjoy Bonfire, Dinner and star gazing.
Trek to downhill be 3 to 4 hrs with careful trekking.
One can trek to Lam Dal at 3980 mts from sea level from Kareri lake via minkani pass (4200 mts from sea level). Trek is 6 to 7 hrs and camping at Lam Dal – Lake is 4 time to Kareri lake and takes 2 hrs to complete walk to circumference of lake.
